Most sites that promise two player games mean two people sharing one keyboard, or a lobby full of strangers. These are for playing one particular person who is somewhere else. You start a game, you get a private link, and whoever you send it to is your opponent. Nobody downloads anything or makes an account, and there are no ads. If nobody is around, most of them can be played solo against the robot.
The best place to start. Everyone knows how it works, a game takes a few minutes, and it gets tense in a way Tic-Tac-Toe never does. Bigger boards and a Pop Out variant once the classic is solved.

Hide five ships and take turns calling shots. Your fleet stays on the server, so there is no way to peek, which is more than can be said for the cardboard version.

Head-to-head Wordle. You both get the same secret word and guess at the same time, so nobody waits for a turn. Four, five or six letters, with a hard mode.

Pick a game and press start. You land in a private room with a link to send, by text, WhatsApp, Discord, email or however you talk to each other. Your friend taps it, types a name, and the board appears for both of you. Moves show up on both screens as they happen.
Rooms are private. They are not listed anywhere and search engines are told to stay out, so the only way in is the link you sent. Each room seats two.
The server checks every move against the rules, so nobody can cheat by fiddling with the page, and games with hidden information keep it hidden.
It all runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and the two of you don't need the same kind of device. There is no account because there is nothing to log in to: your browser remembers which seat is yours, and that is all the site needs to know.
There are no ads because I built this for people I play with, and I would rather it stayed pleasant to use.
Every game on this list has a Play solo button. The robot sits in the other seat and answers as soon as you move. It is good practice before you challenge someone, and a fair way to learn Reversi or Checkers if you have never played.
